Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday congratulated Subedar Neeraj Chopra on winning India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics. Neeraj Chopra, who is a subedar in the 4 Rajputana Rifles in the Indian Army, created history after winning a gold medal in javelin throw with an effort of 87.58m, becoming only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. .

He further said that Subedar Neeraj Chopra’s golden victory in the Olympics has brought respect to the Indian Army, he performed like a true soldier in the Olympics. Neeraj Chopra set a new benchmark in Tokyo, stopping two athletes from the Czech Republic to be placed on the podium. Jacob Vadledge won the silver while former world champion Vitejslav Vesli won the bronze. In 2018, Chopra became the first athlete from India to win gold in javelin throw at both the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.
