SSB Interview : 5-Day Process, Tasks & Screening Tips

SSB Interview 5 days process

Becoming an officer in the Armed Forces isn’t just about passing selection boards like the NDA, CDS, or AFCAT. The real challenge starts when you attend your Service Selection Board. As candidates search closely for their SSB interview dates, their focus should really shift from studying for a writing test to preparing their personalities.

At Trishul Defence Academy, we continually remind our students that the SSB is not a test of knowledge; it’s an evaluation of your personality. You will be evaluated over five days by assessors on such things as your ability to be a leader, your ability to cope with psychological challenges and how you work well in teams and make decisions under pressure. Just understanding how the structure of the SSB exam process gives you a distinct strategic edge over other candidates.

This guide will assist you in becoming fully acquainted with the SSB exam process (5-day selection process), the tasks you will be expected to perform during the SSB, preparation tips, and how to approach your SSB interview dates with confidence.

Understanding the SSB Interview  Process

The SSB exam process was specially designed by the Defence Institute of Psychological Research(DIPR) to assess the Officer-Like Qualities (OLQ’s) of those candidates who have been recommended for coaching through the CDS, NDA, AFCAT, TES,  and other Military Entries.

The 5-day SSB exam process will assist you in evaluating the ability of candidates in four areas of evaluation:

  • Intelligence,
  • Social Adjustment,
  • Social Effectiveness, and
  • Dynamic Leadership Qualities.

Every activity that must be performed at your SSB interview dates will contribute to your final SSB recommendation.

Day 0 – Reporting & Documentation

Each candidate will report to his/her designated centre according to their SSB interview dates for verification of eligibility through document checking.

What Matters:

  • Be on time
  • Have all required paperwork in order
  • Behaviour must be disciplined in the SSB

At Trishul Defence Academy, we prepare our students to take the day of reporting seriously — because the first impressions of an SSB candidate start when they walk onto the campus.

Day 1 – SSB Screening Test (Stage I)

The SSB screening test is the first elimination step in your SSB selection process. Those who pass this screening test will only move on to complete the entire SSB process of five days of thorough evaluation.

OIR (Officers’ Intelligence Rating) Test

  • Verbal and non-verbal reasoning exercises
  • Time-limited problem-solving
  • Logical thinking under pressure

PP&DT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)

  • Create a story from a picture shown for a few seconds
  • Speak confidently to the board
  • Involve yourself in the group discussion
  • Establish a common story with the group

Screening Strategy

  • Work towards clarity, rather than domination, in group discussions
  • Do not shout during group discussions
  • Create a well-structured and believable story
  • Show initiative and work well as part of your group

Approximately 50-60% of candidates fail during the SSB screening tests. It is important that you strategically prepare in advance for your SSB interview dates to ensure you are in the latter 50% that will pass.

At Trishul Defence Academy, mock screening drills are continuously performed based on real board standards before your SSB screening date.

Day 2 – SSB Psychological Tests

Stage 2 commences with SSB psychological tests to determine the psychological features of an individual.

TAT (Thematic Apperception Test)

You will have 12 images and four minutes per story. All stories should depict your ability to solve problems, your initiative, and your empathy.

WAT (Word Association Test)

You will receive a large number of words in rapid succession (approximately 60). You must respond immediately with a positive action-oriented response for each of those words.

SRT (Situation Reaction Test)

You will be given 30 real-life situations and must respond to each, providing an immediate, practical, and clear-cut response.

Self Description (SD)

Write about:

  • parents’ views about you
  • teachers’ views about you
  • friends’ views about you, and
  • your own view of yourself (as well as where you see yourself in your life).

Provide a key insight that will help you achieve your goal.

The SSB psychological tests ultimately exhibit how consistently you present yourself within the various stages of the tests because the thought process displayed in the TAT, WAT and SRT must be naturally cohesive.

At Trishul Defence Academy, we encourage validity and authenticity in psychological responses. Responses that are artificially constructed will stand out during the cross-assessment.

Day 3 & 4 – SSB GTO Tasks

The outdoor (hands-on) phase of the assessment will measure teamwork, courage and leadership through participation in the following SSB GTO tasks:

Major GTO Activities

Group Discussion (GD)

Participation in two structured discussions, the level of clarity and logical reasoning displayed, will comprise your evaluation here.

Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

Solve a practical problem as a group by utilising analytical reasoning and coordination with team members to accomplish the exercise.

Progressive Group Task (PGT)

Cross various challenges using a plank, a rope and other materials to accomplish the objective of the exercise. Teamwork is critical.

Half Group Task (HGT)

This is conducted in smaller groups and requires participants to demonstrate skills related to leadership.

Group Obstacle Race (Snake Race)

An energetic team obstacle course that requires both physical endurance and teamwork skills for completion.

Individual Obstacles

10 physical activities that test your desire and your physical ability.

Command Task

Become a leader. Provide command to your subordinates. Solve your obstacles through logical reasoning.

Lecturette

3-minute speech on any random topic.

Structure, introduction → Body → Conclusion.

SSB GTO tasks are a reflection of your natural leadership style. A leader creates a good impression by dominating others. A leader who does not take control of the situation will create negative experiences for themselves.

At Trishul Defence Academy, students are prepared to become leaders and gain confidence well before the SSB interview dates and through a series of structured practice sessions for SSB GTO tasks.

Personal Interview

Any Day Between Day  2-4 will be the days of your interview. You will be asked questions about yourself, education, hobbies, accomplishments, and current events.

Expect these practical SSB interview questions 2026:

  • Why do you want to join the Armed Forces?
  • Describe a leadership experience.
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Questions from PIQ form
  • Current affairs and defence awareness

The interview panel wants to see your whole personality (mental/emotional), so they will evaluate your honesty, clear communication skills, and emotional maturity.

So you will receive training at Trishul Defence Academy to give you the tools and confidence to answer the SSB interview questions 2026 from memory (no writing them down).

Day 5 – Conference

All three assessors will discuss all the candidates who appear for assessment based on their observations about the candidates’ performance during the SSB interview. Based upon the candidate’s performance and the assessors’ discussions, the candidate will be allowed to answer some reflective-type questions, and then be given a determination of whether they are recommended or not recommended for selection into the Armed Forces.

Your overall performance in the SSB exam process will be considered, as reported in an official written report by all assessors, and you will be given a determination of result – not one day’s performance alone will determine the result.
