The central government has issued a new scrap policy for the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Vehicle Scrapping Policy on 13 August 2021. The Vehicle Scrappage Policy is one of the big schemes of the government, which has been kept in focus in the last few years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched this policy through video conferencing at the Investor Summit in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called it a big step before the 75th Independence Day. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced this policy in the Union Budget of 2021.
The launch of Vehicle Scrappage Policy today is a significant milestone in India’s development journey. The Investor Summit in Gujarat for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure opens a new range of possibilities. I would request our youth & start-ups to join this programme.

The objective of the central government is to reduce air pollution and vehicular pressure on the roads by removing old vehicles from the roads. Union Transport Minister Gadkari had told that there are 51 lakh light motor vehicles in India which are more than 20 years old and 34 lakh light motor vehicles which are more than 15 years old.
There are around 17 lakh medium and heavy commercial vehicles which are more than 15 years old without valid fitness certificate. Old vehicles pollute the environment 10 to 12 times more than fitted vehicles and pose a huge risk to road safety.
