10 NDA Myths That Stop Students From Even Trying

Every year, we meet a student who had everything needed for NDA. Good grades, a strong will, a dream of wearing the uniform. But they never filled the form.

Why? Because someone told them a myth. “You are from Arts, forget it.” “Your English is weak.” “Nobody in your family is in the Army.” One wrong sentence, and the dream quietly died.

At Trishul Defence Academy, Ranchi, Prayagraj, Delhi, Gurgaon, Agra, Sri Ganganagar, we hear these NDA myths from students and parents every single week. Most of them are simply not true. Some are half-true, which is worse, because they sound believable.

This blog busts 10 common NDA myths, one by one. For each myth, you will get:

  • The myth — what people believe
  • The truth — what actually happens in NDA selection
  • What to do — one clear action you can take today

If you are a student, read it to clear your doubts. If you are a parent, read it before you say “no” to your child’s dream.

Myths about who can apply

Myth 1: “Only 90%+ toppers clear NDA”

The truth: NDA does not ask for your board percentage. You only need to pass Class 12 (or be appearing in it). The written exam covers Maths, English, Science, History, Geography and current affairs.

This wide syllabus actually rewards balanced students. A school topper who is brilliant in one subject can still struggle. An average student who studies every subject steadily often does better.

What to do: Stop comparing your marksheet. Start comparing your weekly study hours across all subjects.

Myth 2: “Only PCM students can join NDA”

The truth: Arts, Commerce and Biology students can apply for the Army wing of NDA. Physics and Maths in Class 12 are needed only for the Air Force and Navy wings.

The Army wing also has the largest share of NDA seats. So non-science students are not fighting for a tiny quota.

One important point: every candidate writes the same Maths paper (300 marks). So a Commerce or Arts student must prepare Maths seriously. Topics like Matrices, Sets, Statistics and Probability are a good place to start.

What to do: If you are not from PCM, begin Class 11 NDA Maths early. Do not let the Maths paper become a surprise.

Myth 3: “You need a defence family background”

The truth: NDA selection is based only on the written exam, the SSB interview and the medical test. There is no extra mark for having a father or uncle in uniform.

According to Sumit Sir (Learn with Sumit), around 400–450 of roughly 500 yearly selections come from civilian families. That is more than 80%. Most officers you see today came from ordinary homes like yours.

What to do: Parents, your job is not to have contacts. Your job is to support discipline and routine at home.

Myths about girls, English and fitness

Myth 4: “NDA is only for boys”

The truth: After a Supreme Court order in 2021, girls can now take the NDA exam. Selected girls train at NDA Khadakwasla, Pune, alongside boys. They then get a Permanent Commission as officers in the Army, Navy or Air Force.

This is a big deal. Earlier, most women entered the forces only after graduation. Now a girl can start her officer career right after Class 12.

Also, girls do not need a sports certificate to clear NDA. The SSB looks for officer potential, not medals.

What to do: Check the number of seats for women in the latest UPSC notification. They are fewer than for boys, so start preparing early and seriously.

Myth 5: “You must speak fluent English to clear SSB”

The truth: English is a tool to share your thoughts. It is not a test of accent. SSB assessors want to see clear thinking, honest answers and confidence.

Hindi-medium students clear SSB every year. A simple, correct sentence spoken with confidence beats a fancy sentence spoken with fear.

The written exam is different. The English paper carries 200 marks, so grammar and vocabulary do matter there.

What to do: Speak in English for 10 minutes daily, even if it feels broken. Read one newspaper editorial and explain it aloud.

Myth 6: “You need a bodybuilder’s body”

The truth: NDA does not need big muscles. It needs stamina, a healthy BMI and good medical fitness. The SSB obstacles test agility and courage, not how much weight you can lift.

A good fitness target before SSB looks like this:

Test Boys (target) Girls (target)
2.4 km run 12–14 minutes 14–16 minutes
Push-ups 20 15
Sit-ups 30 25
Other 6–8 chin-ups Rope hanging

These are practice targets, not official cut-offs. They show you are fit enough to handle SSB and academy training.

What to do: Run, play outdoor sports and do bodyweight exercises. Skip the heavy gym routine and protein-powder obsession.

Myths about the exam, SSB and academy life

Myth 7: “Without coaching, you can never clear NDA”

The truth: Many students clear the written exam through disciplined self-study. Previous year papers, a good Maths book and a daily newspaper can take you far.

Where coaching truly helps is speed and SSB. Group tasks, group discussions and the interview are hard to practise alone. You need a group, feedback and someone who has sat on the other side of the table.

What to do: Self-study is enough to start. Choose guidance when you need structure, mock tests or SSB practice.

Myth 8: “The written exam is the hardest part”

The truth: The written exam is a big filter. It has 270 questions across two papers, worth 900 marks, with negative marking. But the real test of an officer comes after it.

The 5-day SSB interview checks how you think, plan, lead and work in a team. It measures 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), such as initiative, cooperation, courage and power of expression. Many students who clear the written exam are not recommended at SSB.

What to do: Do not wait for your written result to start SSB preparation. Build communication, current affairs and decision-making from Class 11.

Myth 9: “Medicals are a lottery, so why try?”

The truth: The medical test is strict, but it is not random. Many problems are temporary, like extra ear wax, being slightly overweight or minor dental issues. These can often be fixed and reviewed.

Some conditions, like severe flat feet, knock knees or colour blindness, can be serious for certain branches. The Air Force flying branch has the strictest standards.

What to do: Get a basic check-up early (eyes, ears, teeth, weight, posture). Fix what can be fixed. Then focus your energy on the written exam and SSB.

Myth 10: “If I fail once, my dream is over”

The truth: Many officers cleared NDA on their second, third or even later attempt. UPSC holds NDA twice a year. The course-start age limit is 16.5 to 19.5 years, which gives most students several chances.

And NDA is not the only door. CDS, TES, AFCAT and NCC entries are all open later.

What to do: After every attempt, write down exactly where you lost marks or what SSB feedback you received. Fix that one thing before the next attempt.

Bonus myth: “NDA life is only punishment”

Physical training at NDA is tough, yes. But it is only one part of the course. Cadets also study for a degree, play sports, learn leadership and build lifelong character. Training is designed to build officers, not break them.

Expert insight: what SSB assessors actually look for

Brigadier Amar Narayan, Director of Trishul Defence Academy, Ranchi, served as President of the Services Selection Board at Allahabad for over 3 years. In that time, he personally screened and interviewed more than 3,000 candidates. And Colonel Pankaj Mehrotra, Director of Trishul Defence Academy Allahabad, served as Deupty President of the SSB Boards Allahabad And Bhopal for Over 10+ Years. He personally screened and interviewed more than 10000 candidates.

His experience points to one clear pattern. Assessors look for trainability: can this young person be shaped into an officer? Background, accent, marks and muscles matter far less than most families think.

We see the same pattern in our own classrooms:

  • Weeks 3–4: stamina and recovery start improving with a daily fitness routine
  • Month 2: sitting capacity and focus improve; students become more goal-driven
  • Months 2–3: students stop giving memorised answers and start reasoning on their own
  • First few months: shy students begin speaking in group discussions with confidence

In other words, most of what students fear can be built. It just needs time, routine and the right guidance.

Your 5-step plan to beat the myths

  1. Start in Class 11. It gives you time to balance board exams and the NDA syllabus.
  2. Prepare all subjects evenly. Give Maths and GAT (English + General Knowledge) equal attention.
  3. Practise previous year papers under time. You get about 1.25 minutes per Maths question and 1 minute per GAT question.
  4. Build SSB skills daily. Speak, read the news, take part in discussions and stay physically active.
  5. Keep a backup plan. Know your other routes: CDS, AFCAT, TES and NCC entries.

FAQs on NDA myths

Yes. Students from any stream can apply for the Army wing. Only the Air Force and Navy wings need Physics and Maths in Class 12. Everyone writes the same Maths paper, so Maths preparation is a must.

What is the age limit for NDA?

You must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years old on the date the course starts. Check the exact birth-date range in each UPSC notification.

The best time is Class 11, around age 15–16. Starting in Class 10 to build Maths and English basics is even better.
