A clear guide for Class 10 and Class 11 students (and their parents) on timing, attempts, and the smartest way to begin
The Attempt Most Students Waste Without Knowing It
Here is a hard truth we see every year. Many students sit for their first NDA exam in Class 12 just “to get a feel of it.” They go in unprepared, score low, and tell themselves, “Next time I’ll be serious.”
But NDA does not give unlimited next times. There is an age window, and it closes fast. Every attempt you treat as practice is one real chance you will never get back.
That is exactly why an NDA foundation course in Class 11 makes such a big difference. It does not magically add attempts to your life. It does something better: it makes sure every attempt you are eligible for is a serious one.
Let’s break down how it works.
How Many Attempts Do You Actually Get for NDA?
UPSC conducts NDA twice a year: NDA-I (around April) and NDA-II (around September). You can apply once you are in Class 12, even before your board results.
The age rule is simple but often misunderstood. You must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years old on the date your course starts at the academy. Since training begins roughly 9 to 12 months after the written exam, most students can sit for their last eligible exam at about 18.5 years of age.
For a typical student who finishes Class 10 at around 16, this usually works out to 3 to 4 written attempts (sometimes 5, depending on the exact date of birth).
Your attempt window, step by step
| Attempt | When | Your situation | Reality if you start late |
| Attempt 1 | NDA-II, September | Class 12 (appearing) | Usually wasted — syllabus not ready |
| Attempt 2 | NDA-I, April | Class 12 boards + practicals running | High pressure, little time to study |
| Attempt 3 | NDA-II, September | After Class 12 | Often the first “serious” attempt |
| Attempt 4 | NDA-I, April | After Class 12 | Last or second-last chance for many |
Note: Exact eligibility depends on your date of birth. Always check the age window in the official UPSC notification for each exam.
Look at the last column again. A student who starts preparing only after Class 12 has already lost the first two attempts. In practice, they get one or two real chances, not three or four.
A student who starts in Class 11 walks into Attempt 1 prepared. That is the difference between 2 real shots and 4 real shots at becoming an officer.
Why the September Attempt in Class 12 Is Your Best Shot
Many toppers will tell you the same thing: the September attempt in Class 12 is the most valuable one.
- Board pressure is low. Your Class 12 boards are still months away.
- Class 11 maths is fresh. A large part of the NDA maths paper comes from Class 11 topics like trigonometry, sets, sequences, and coordinate geometry.
- If you clear it, you face the SSB early. That leaves time to learn and come back stronger if needed.
Compare this with the April attempt. It falls right after Class 12 boards and practicals. Even strong students struggle to give it their full attention.
So the real question is simple: will you be ready by September of Class 12? You can only say “yes” if you start in Class 11.
The NDA Exam Is Big — It Needs Time, Not Panic
NDA is not a small exam you can cram for in three months. Here is what you are preparing for:
| Paper | Content | Questions | Marks | Wrong answer |
| Paper I | Mathematics (Class 11 & 12) | 120 | 300 | −0.83 |
| Paper II | English (200) + General Knowledge (400) | 150 | 600 | −1.33 |
| Total | Written exam | 270 | 900 | Negative marking |
You get about 1.25 minutes per maths question and roughly 1 minute per GAT question. Speed like this does not come from reading. It comes from months of timed practice.
UPSC also sets minimum qualifying marks in each paper. So you cannot be brilliant in GK and weak in maths. You need balance, and balance takes time to build.
What a Good NDA Foundation Course in Class 10th, 11th Should Cover
An NDA foundation course for Class 11 is not just “extra tuition.” It should run your school syllabus and your NDA syllabus together, so you are never forced to choose between the two.

Class 11 targets
- Finish 100% of Class 11 maths — NCERT first, then NDA previous year questions (PYQs).
- Cover the full GAT syllabus — English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Polity, and Economics.
- Build daily habits — newspaper reading, spoken English, and physical fitness.
Class 12 targets (before the September attempt)
- Cover 40–50% of the key Class 12 maths topics — especially calculus basics, matrices, and determinants.
- Revise Class 11 maths and GAT on a fixed cycle.
- Take full-length mock tests under real timing and negative marking.
- Start SSB personality preparation — group discussions, lecturettes, and self-awareness.
The smart way to study maths for NDA
- NCERT first. Master the basic concepts and exercises of Class 11 and 12.
- Then PYQs. NDA repeats patterns. Past papers show you what UPSC loves to ask.
- Then level up — slightly.Practise a little above NCERT level, but below JEE Mains. You don’t need JEE Advanced to clear NDA maths.
Five Hidden Benefits of Starting Early
More prepared attempts is the big win. But starting in Class 11 also gives you advantages most students only discover later.
1. Time to fix medical issues
Many SSB-recommended candidates face temporary rejection in the medical exam for things like being overweight or underweight, excess ear wax, or minor dental problems. If you start early, you have years — not 42 days — to work on weight, fitness, and posture with proper guidance.
2. Fitness builds slowly, and that’s fine
NDA wants stamina, not big muscles. A target like running 2.4 km in about 12–14 minutes (boys) or 14–16 minutes (girls) is very reachable with a steady routine. At our academy, we usually see stamina and recovery improve within the first 3–4 weeks of regular training.
3. Communication grows with practice
The SSB looks at 15 Officer Like Qualities, including power of expression, initiative, and the ability to influence a group. These cannot be learned in a crash course. Students who hesitate in group discussions at first usually start speaking with clarity after a few months of regular GD and lecturette practice.
4. Your study stamina improves
NDA has two papers of 2.5 hours each. Sitting with full focus for that long is a skill. In a structured daily routine, we typically see students’ sitting capacity and patience improve noticeably within about two months.
5. Each attempt becomes a learning step
When you are prepared from the first attempt, even a near miss teaches you something useful. You learn your weak areas, your exam temperament, and maybe even get SSB exposure early. That turns your attempts into a ladder instead of a gamble.
Quick Answers for Non-Science Students and Girls
- Arts or Commerce students can apply for NDA, but only for the Army wing. Navy and Air Force need Physics and Maths in Class 12. You still write the same maths paper, so starting early matters even more for you.
- Girls have been eligible for NDA since the Supreme Court’s 2021 order and can join the Army, Navy, and Air Force with a Permanent Commission. A sports background is not compulsory — the SSB looks for trainability and officer qualities.
- Stream choice tip: If you can, choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) in Class 11. It keeps all three services open and also allows technical entries later.
How Trishul Defence Academy Runs Its Foundation Batch
At Trishul Defence Academy, Ranchi, our Foundation batch is built around one idea: make the September attempt in Class 12 count.
- 6 hours of daily classes that combine school board syllabus with NDA preparation.
- Vocabulary Enrichment Program for the NDA English paper, plus level-based weekly group discussions and dedicated spoken English support.
- 15+ full mock tests, quiz classes, and a library for self-study.
- Cadet Success Cell for one-to-one mentoring, guided by Brigadier Amar Narayan, who served as President of the Services Selection Board, Allahabad, and personally interviewed over 3,000 candidates.
- On-campus fitness and SSB facilities — a ground near the hostel, a mini GTO ground, volleyball and badminton courts, and a shooting facility.
- Separate, supervised hostels for boys and girls (400 beds in total).
Our students join the Foundation batch between April and June of Class 11, so they have well over a year of structured preparation before their first NDA attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
Can a Class 11 student appear for the NDA exam?
No. You can apply only when you are in Class 12 (appearing) or have passed Class 12. That is why Class 11 is the best year to build your foundation — it’s your preparation year before the first real attempt.
How many attempts do I get for NDA?
There is no fixed attempt limit. Your attempts are limited by age: you must be 16.5 to 19.5 years old when the course starts. For most students, this means about 3 to 4 written attempts, depending on the date of birth.
Is it too late to start NDA preparation in Class 12?
It is not too late, but it is harder. You will likely be underprepared for the September attempt and busy with boards during the April attempt. Starting in Class 11 gives you a calmer, stronger start.
Will an NDA foundation course in Class 11 affect my board exams?
A good foundation course runs the board syllabus and NDA syllabus together. NDA maths is built on Class 11 and 12 NCERT, so the two support each other instead of competing.
What score should I target in the NDA written exam?
Aim for 400–450 out of 900. Past cut-offs have generally been around 340–360, so this target keeps you safely above the line, while still clearing the minimum marks in each paper.
Do I need to be very fit or sporty to join a foundation course?
No. You only need the willingness to train regularly. Stamina, strength, and confidence build step by step with a daily routine.
Conclusion
NDA gives you a limited window, not unlimited chances. Starting your preparation in Class 11 means you don’t spend your first one or two attempts “just trying.” You walk in ready — and every attempt becomes a real shot at the uniform.
If you are finishing Class 10 or are already in Class 11, this is the right time to begin. An NDA foundation course in Class 11 is the simplest way to turn your age window into maximum opportunity.
