Gangasagar Mela started on January 10, 2022 which takes place on Gangasagar Island in West Bengal. It will run till 16 January 2022.
Gangasagar fair is organized every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. This fair is being organized after giving approval by the Calcutta High Court.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, thousands of pilgrims, seers and tourists take a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal to mark the event. They offer prayers at Kapil Muni Temple.
The Calcutta High Court expressed concern about the virus spreading through oral and nasal droplets through river water after pilgrims took a holy dip at the Sangam. However, the government informed the court that the residents of Sagar Island had taken both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and the test-positivity rate was under control.
