EYE Standards Required To Join Indian Army

The Indian Armed Forces have strict medical standards that candidates need to meet in order to be eligible for joining. Among these, the visual standards are particularly important and can sometimes be a cause for rejection. In this article, we will discuss the visual standards required for joining the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.

Starting with the Indian Army, candidates must have a visual acuity of 6/6 in each eye, with or without glasses. The maximum limit of myopia is 3.5D and hypermetropia is +2.5D, including astigmatism. Candidates should also have good binocular vision and be able to recognize red and green colors. Women candidates are allowed a minimum acceptable visual acuity of 6/18 in their worse eye, with myopia not exceeding -5.5 and astigmatism.

For those who have undergone LASIK surgery, they must have had it done after the age of 20 and have a stable refraction for at least six months after the procedure. The corrected vision should be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye, with a maximum residual refraction of +1.50 in any meridian for myopia or hypermetropia.

Moving on to the Indian Air Force, candidates must have a visual acuity of 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other, with correction up to 6/6 for hypermetropia. The near vision must be N-5 for both eyes, and color vision must be CP-1(ML T), which is the correct recognition of colored lights shown through the paired apertures on the Holmes-Wright lantern at low brightness at a distance of 6 meters.

LASIK surgery is admissible for Transport and Helicopter streams of Short Service Commission (Flying Branch), but candidates must meet certain conditions, including having had the surgery done after the age of 20 and having a corneal thickness of at least 450 microns.

Lastly, the Indian Navy has similar visual standards to the Indian Army, with a visual acuity of 6/12 without glasses and 6/6 with glasses. The maximum limit of myopia is -1.5D and hypermetropia is +1.5D, with binocular vision III and normal color perception.
