Central government prohibits onion seed exports with immediate effect

The central government recently banned the export of onion seeds. In this regard, a notification issued by the central government has said that this ban will come into force with immediate effect. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar recently said that the government is taking different steps with the release of buffer stock of one lakh tonnes to get rid of the onion inflation. Why ban on onion seed exports?

The central government has completely banned the export of onion seeds to increase availability in the domestic market. Earlier, onion seeds were included in the export-controlled category. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has banned the export of its seeds to ensure availability of onion at a cheaper rate to consumers.

On September 14, the central government had banned the export of onions to control the rising prices of onions. The Food Minister said that the government has also started importing onions and 7,000 tonnes of onions have arrived in the country so far and is expected to reach more than 25,000 tonnes before Diwali.

According to the central government report, the average retail prices of onions in the country have seen a variation till October 21, which is 22.12 per cent (Rs 45.33 to Rs 55.60 per kg) over the previous year and 114.16 per cent (as compared to the previous five years). 25.87 to 55.60 per kg).
