Every year, we meet a parent who says the same thing: “Sir, he was ready. We just didn’t know he was over-age.”
The child had the marks. The fitness. The dream of wearing the uniform. But his birth date fell one day outside the UPSC window. No appeal. No relaxation. No second chance.
The NDA age limit is strict, and it is not about “age” the way we usually think of it. It is about your child’s exact date of birth. Two students born six months apart can get a very different number of chances.
This guide shows you, in two minutes, whether your child is eligible for NDA 2027, and how many attempts they really have left.
NDA Age Limit 2027: The Official Date Windows
The rule is simple: your child must be between 16½ and 19½ years old on the day their NDA course starts, not on the exam day. That is why UPSC gives a fixed date-of-birth window for each exam.

NDA 1 2027 dates are from the UPSC 2027 calendar (notification 2 December 2026, last date 22 December 2026). The NDA 2 2027 window follows UPSC’s fixed six-month pattern and will be confirmed in its notification.
Three rules parents often miss
- No relaxation for anyone. There is no extra age for SC, ST, OBC, EWS or any other category. One day over is over.
- Only the Class 10 certificate counts. UPSC accepts the date of birth written on the matriculation (Class 10) certificate. A different date on an Aadhaar card or school register will not help.
- The date cannot be changed later. Whatever you enter in the form is final. Check it twice before you submit.

The hidden catch: age-eligible is not the same as exam-eligible
UPSC also requires your child to be in Class 12 or have passed Class 12 when applying. A Class 11 student cannot apply, even if the birth date fits.
So a child born in 2010 or 2011 may pass the age test today but still has to wait for Class 12. The good news? Those children have the most attempts ahead of them, if they start preparing now.
Two real-life examples
- Aarav, born 15 September 2008. He fits NDA 1 2027 but misses NDA 2 2027 by a few months. April 2027 is his final NDA attempt.
- Riya, born 10 March 2009. She fits both NDA 1 and NDA 2 2027. If she is in Class 12 in 2026–27, she can sit for both. She has a two-attempt runway in 2027 alone.

Beyond Age: Four More Checks Before You Apply
1. Class and stream

A Commerce or Arts student can still become an Army officer through NDA. But every candidate writes the same Maths paper, so Maths preparation is not optional.
2. Marital status
Only unmarried candidates can apply, and they must stay unmarried until training is complete.
3. Daughters are fully eligible
Since the Supreme Court’s 2021 order, girls sit for NDA under the same age window as boys and can join the Army, Navy or Air Force. Minimum height is 152 cm for girls and 157 cm for boys (162.5 cm for the Flying branch).
4. Nationality
Your child must be an Indian citizen. A few other categories are listed in the official notification.

How Many NDA Attempts Does Your Child Really Get?
UPSC sets no limit on attempts. Your child can sit for NDA as many times as their age allows. NDA is held twice a year, so most students get 3 or 4 attempts in total. Their birth month decides which.
Look at two classmates, both in Class 12 during 2026–27:

Same class. Same school. One extra chance, just because of the birth month.
Why starting in Class 10 or 11 matters
The first attempt comes in September of Class 12, only about five months into the session. A child who begins NDA preparation in Class 12 walks into that first attempt half-ready. That turns a real chance into a practice round.
At our academy, we see a clear pattern: students who start in Class 11 treat Class 12 attempts as genuine shots, not warm-ups. NDA 1 2027 has 120 Maths questions and 150 GAT questions. That syllabus takes time, and age will not wait.
Five costly mistakes parents make
- Checking age instead of date of birth. “He is 17” means nothing. Match the exact date with the window.
- Trusting the Aadhaar date. Only the Class 10 certificate date is accepted. If they differ, fix the issue early.
- Thinking the first attempt is just for practice. For many children, it is one of only three chances.
- Waiting for Class 12 results to start. By then, two attempts are already gone.
- Assuming daughters can’t apply. They can, with the same age window as sons.

“The boys and girls who get recommended are rarely the ones who started late and rushed. They are the ones whose parents checked the dates early, planned every attempt, and gave them time to grow. Age is the one thing you cannot coach. Plan around it.”

What is the NDA age limit for 2027?
Your child must be 16½ to 19½ years old on the course start date. For NDA 1 2027, that means born between 2 July 2008 and 1 July 2011.
Is the age limit different for girls?
No. Girls and boys have exactly the same date-of-birth window.
Is there any age relaxation for SC, ST or OBC candidates?
No. NDA has no age relaxation for any category.
My child is in Class 11. Can they apply for NDA 1 2027?
No. Only Class 12 students or Class 12 pass-outs can apply. Use Class 11 to build the foundation.
Which document is used to prove date of birth?
The Class 10 (matriculation) certificate or its equivalent. UPSC does not accept other documents for this.
How many times can my child attempt NDA?
There is no attempt limit. Age is the only limit. Most students get 3 or 4 attempts.
When is the NDA 1 2027 exam?
The exam is on 11 April 2027. Applications open 2 December 2026 and close 22 December 2026 on upsc.gov.in.
