39 women officers of the Indian Army have got a big victory. All of them will now get permanent commission. The Central Government has given this information in the Supreme Court. The central government told the Supreme Court that it would give permanent commission to 39 women officers of the Indian Army. During the hearing held on Friday, the Supreme Court said that the Center should issue orders to give permanent commission to these women officers. Along with this, the Supreme Court has also directed to give a detailed chart about the reasons for not granting permanent commission to 25 women officers.
Permanent commission means will serve in the army till the age of retirement whereas short service commission is for 10 years with an option to leave or choose permanent commission at the end of 10 years. If an officer does not get a permanent commission, the officer can choose an extension of four years.

On October 1, the court had asked the government not to relieve any officer from service. A two-judge bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice BV Nagarathna was hearing the matter. Senior advocates V Mohana, Huzefa Ahmadi and Meenakshi Arora, representing women officers in the case, told the court that disqualification of women officers was against the Supreme Court’s decision in March.
The government was given three months to complete this process. At that time the Supreme Court had said that the Army’s evaluation criteria for granting permanent commission to women officers was “systematic discrimination against them”.
