You reported early. Your documents were checked. You finished two OIR tests, wrote a PPDT story in four minutes, and spoke in a group discussion with 12 strangers.<\/p>\n
Now you\u2019re sitting in the hall, waiting.<\/p>\n
Some chest numbers get called. Those candidates get new chest numbers and a PIQ form. They stay.<\/p>\n
The rest get exit formalities and a travel allowance form. They go home.<\/p>\n
Months of preparation. A long train journey. And it\u2019s over before you\u2019ve even seen the GTO ground.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s the part that hurts most: most candidates who get screened out never find out why.<\/strong> There\u2019s no marksheet. No feedback. Just a bus back to the station and a question that keeps playing in your head: \u201cWhat did I do wrong?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n This blog answers that question. We\u2019ve broken down the 7 most common SSB screening out reasons, and exactly what to do about each one.<\/p>\n The SSB Directing Staff at Selection Center South, Bengaluru put it simply: the process is not a measure of how capable you are. It is about selecting the right person for the right job.<\/strong><\/p>\n And you\u2019re judged only on how you perform on that day.<\/strong> Your 95% in boards, your school name, your sports certificates: none of it walks into the testing hall with you.<\/p>\n That\u2019s scary. It\u2019s also good news. Because it means Day 1 is a fresh start for everyone, and the gap between \u201cscreened out\u201d and \u201cscreened in\u201d is something you can train for.<\/p>\n Screening happens on Day 1 and has three parts:<\/p>\n Your OIR score and PPDT performance (story + narration + discussion) are combined, and results come out the same afternoon.<\/p>\n Now, the 7 places where candidates lose it.<\/p>\n A lot of candidates think the \u201creal\u201d SSB starts with PPDT. So they walk into OIR casual and under-prepared.<\/p>\n Big mistake. Your OIR score is counted together with your PPDT performance<\/strong> for the Stage 1 result. A weak OIR puts pressure on everything that comes after.<\/p>\n Where candidates go wrong:<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong><\/p>\n Thirty seconds. A blurry, unclear picture. And a dozen nervous minds trying to guess what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n Most candidates lock onto one object and miss the rest of the scene. Then the details they record don\u2019t match the picture, or don\u2019t match their own story.<\/p>\n In that 1 minute after the picture, you have to record:<\/p>\n If you mark the mood as positive and then write a gloomy story, the assessor notices.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Train a scanning habit. In 30 seconds, check four things in order: people \u2192 objects \u2192 setting \u2192 time of day\/mood.<\/strong> Practise this on 5 random pictures a day.<\/p>\n This is one of the most common SSB screening out reasons, and it comes in two flavours.<\/p>\n The superhero story:<\/strong> \u201cRohan single-handedly stopped the robbers, saved the village and was awarded by the Chief Minister.\u201d<\/em> Exciting? Yes. Realistic? No.<\/p>\n The dark story:<\/strong> an accident, a death, a failure, and nothing after it. No action, no recovery, no outcome.<\/p>\n Assessors want neither. They want a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, driven by a real person taking practical action.<\/strong><\/p>\n A good PPDT story covers:<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Use a simple formula: Situation \u2192 Thinking \u2192 Action \u2192 Result.<\/strong> Your hero should be an ordinary person who notices a problem, makes a plan, involves others and gets a realistic, positive outcome.<\/p>\n Four minutes feels like enough. It isn\u2019t, unless you\u2019ve practised.<\/p>\n Many candidates write a beautiful opening, spend too long on the background, and then rush the ending in two lines. Or they don\u2019t finish at all. An incomplete story is a story without a result, and the result is where your thinking shows.<\/p>\n There\u2019s also a language rule to remember. The story must be written in English.<\/strong> If you get stuck on a word, you may use Hindi briefly, but you must switch back to English immediately. No third language is allowed.<\/strong><\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong><\/p>\n After writing, candidates sit in a semi-circle. Narration goes clockwise, starting from the lowest chest number. You\u2019re expected to narrate without reading from your paper.<\/strong><\/p>\n This is where nerves show up. Candidates:<\/p>\n Assessors are watching your communication clarity and confidence<\/strong>, not just your plot.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Practise narrating out loud, every single day. Stand in front of a mirror, or narrate to a friend. Keep it short and crisp: characters, what\u2019s happening, how it ends. Look at the group while you speak.<\/p>\n The group discussion starts automatically after the last narration. And this is where two kinds of candidates often get screened out.<\/p>\n The Fighter:<\/strong> Talks the loudest. Interrupts. Pushes their own story no matter what. Treats the GD like a debate to win.<\/p>\n The Ghost:<\/strong> Waits for the \u201cright moment\u201d to speak. The moment never comes. Says one line, or nothing at all.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s what most aspirants miss: the goal of this discussion is not to win. It\u2019s to help the group arrive at one common story.<\/strong> At the end, the group nominates one candidate to present the agreed story.<\/p>\n Assessors watch for:<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong><\/p>\n Some of these won\u2019t appear on any score sheet. But they quietly damage your performance in the hall.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Treat Day 1 like a mission. Pack the night before, check every document twice, carry 3 pens, and do your last 2 weeks of practice without a watch.<\/p>\n Look at the list again. Not one of these reasons is \u201cnot intelligent enough.\u201d<\/p>\n Every single one is about how you perform under pressure<\/strong> and how you behave in a group.<\/strong> Speed. Observation. Clarity. Composure. You\u2019re not the first, and you won\u2019t be the last.<\/p>\n The advice from SSB duty staff to candidates who aren\u2019t recommended is worth remembering: take it in a positive spirit, look honestly at yourself, fix your preparation gaps, and come back better prepared.<\/strong><\/p>\n Read the 7 reasons again. That\u2019s your training plan for the next attempt.<\/p>\n The most common reasons are a weak OIR score, poor observation in PPDT, unrealistic or incomplete stories, nervous narration, dominating or staying silent in the group discussion, and avoidable mistakes like missing documents or a dead pen.<\/p>\n Yes. Your OIR score is combined with your PPDT performance to decide the Stage 1 result. Ignoring it is risky.<\/p>\n The story must be in English. If you\u2019re stuck on a word, you can briefly use Hindi, but you must return to English right away. A third language is not allowed.<\/p>\n No.\u00a0You\u2019re assessed only on your performance during the tests on that day.<\/p>\n No.\u00a0Participation is assessed.
