India took over the command of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on 01 August 2021. It will preside over this global body for a month. During this one-month tenure, his focus will be on maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. Russia and France congratulated India for taking over the presidency of the UNSC.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the UNSC. He will be the first Prime Minister of the country to do so. India has taken over the chair of the UNSC from France. At the same time, French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenain said that we are committed to working with India on strategic issues such as maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism and upholding the rules-based multilateral system.<\/p>\n

According to the program released by the United Nations, Tirumurti will also provide details of work to those member countries of the United Nations which are not members of the council. Tirumurti said that India and France have historical and close ties.<\/p>\n

This is India’s seventh term in the UNSC as a non-permanent member. Prior to this, India has been a member of the United Nations Security Council in 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85 and 1991-92. Following its election to the global body, India said it would promote responsible and inclusive solutions for international peace and security.<\/p>\n

India became a non-permanent member of the Security Council on January 1, 2021. India’s membership will end on 31 December 2022 and during this entire term, India will have the presidency of the UNSC twice. India will again preside over the council in the last month of its two-year term i.e. in December next year.<\/p>\n
