The Indian Navy received the first guided-missile destroyer ‘P15B’ from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on 28 October 2021. This information was given in an official statement on 30 October 2021. According to the statement, the construction and delivery of this ship named ‘Visakhapatnam’ is a milestone for the government and the Navy in view of indigenous warship building programmes.
According to the statement, a guided-missile destroyer can fire an anti-aircraft missile from its own deck. The Navy tweeted that the first indigenously built guided-missile destroyer ‘P15B Ship’ prepared at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai was handed over to the Indian Navy on 28 October 2021 at Visakhapatnam.
The ship has a capacity of 312 crew and has a capacity of 4000 nautical miles and it is capable of completing the target of a typical 42 days. The ship also includes digital network with high level of automation such as Giga Beat Ethernet based Ship Data Network (GESDN), Combat Management System (CMS), Automatic Power Management System (APMS) and Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) etc.

The length of this destroyer is 164 meters and displacement capacity is 7500 tons. The ship is equipped with the supersonic surface to surface ‘Brahmos’ missile and ‘Barak-8’ long range surface to air missile. Indigenously developed Anti-Submarine Weapon and Sensors have been installed in the Undersea Warfare Capable Destroyer. Along with this, heavy weight torpedo tube launchers, rocket launchers etc. have also been provided.
The induction of the destroyer will not only enhance the combat readiness of the Indian Navy, but will be a huge leap forward in our quest for a self-reliant India. Earlier, the Indian Navy inducted two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk III in its 321 flight at the Naval Helicopter Base INS Shikara in Mumbai. According to the Indian Navy, there are currently 321 Chetak helicopters in flight which will be replaced by the more capable and versatile ALH MK III aircraft which are equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance, communication, security and survival equipment.
